Shloka 11.18

“You are the imperishable, the supreme object of knowledge; You are the ultimate resting place of this universe; You are the eternal guardian of dharma, the ancient Person, I believe.”
Key Teaching: Arjuna recognizes Krishna as the imperishable, supreme, and eternal guardian.
Theme: Guidance, Dharma, Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga.
Description:
Arjuna declares Krishna as the imperishable, supreme object of knowledge, ultimate resting place of the universe, eternal guardian of dharma, and ancient Person. This verse, continuing 11.17, addresses Arjuna’s realization (2.9, 11.3). The themes of guidance, as Krishna’s form inspires, dharma, as Arjuna acknowledges divine truth, and Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga, as he praises the cosmic form, are central.

In the Mahabharata, Arjuna’s reverence (1.28–46) contrasts with Duryodhana’s ignorance (1.3–11). Arjuna’s realization strengthens his Kshatriya duty, aligning with Karma Yoga (2.47, 11.17). Krishna is the eternal guardian.

Philosophically, this verse addresses the human quest for ultimate truth, a theme Krishna refines with teachings on his nature (10.15). Arjuna’s realization reflects Krishna’s guidance overcoming reluctance. The theme of Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga underscores the Gita’s focus on divine supremacy.

Sanjaya’s narration frames Arjuna’s words objectively, emphasizing their profound clarity. This verse serves as a metaphor for life’s truth, where Krishna is the supreme. Krishna’s revelation prepares readers for performing duty with divine faith, aligning with liberation.
