Shloka 16.15

“I am rich and highborn; who else is equal to me? I will give alms, perform sacrifices, and enjoy.”
Key Teaching: Demonic beings boast of wealth and status, seeking enjoyment.
Theme: Guidance, Jnana Yoga, Moksha Sannyasa Yoga.
Description:
Krishna describes demonic beings boasting, “I am rich, highborn; who equals me? I’ll give alms, perform sacrifices, enjoy.” This verse, continuing 16.14, addresses Arjuna’s quest (2.9, 13.1). The themes of guidance, as Krishna exposes demonic ego, Jnana Yoga, as he emphasizes delusion, and Moksha Sannyasa Yoga, as he warns of bondage, are central.

In the Mahabharata, Duryodhana’s pride in status (1.3–11) mirrors this, contrasting Arjuna’s humility (1.28–46). The teaching aligns with Jnana Yoga (13.9), critiquing ego, and builds on demonic boasting (16.14). Krishna highlights their selfcentered rituals.

Philosophically, the verse exposes statusdriven delusion, a theme refined with teachings on humility (6.14). Arjuna’s path is clarified by rejecting such pride. The Gita’s focus on Moksha Sannyasa Yoga warns against egodriven actions. The verse connects to teachings on selfless action (2.47).

Sanjaya’s narration ensures objective clarity. This verse serves as a metaphor for life’s pride, where status binds. Krishna’s teaching prepares readers to transcend ego, aligning with moksha. The boasting resonates with Arjuna’s need for humility.
