Shloka 2.40

“In this path, there is no loss of effort, nor is there any harm; even a little of this dharma protects from great fear.”
Key Teaching: Karma Yoga ensures no effort is wasted and protects from fear.
Theme: Guidance, Dharma, Karma Yoga.
Description:
Krishna teaches that in Karma Yoga, no effort is lost, there is no harm, and even minimal practice protects from great fear. This verse, building on 2.39, encourages Arjuna to act without fear of failure, addressing his refusal (2.9). The themes of guidance, as Krishna instructs, dharma, as he supports action, and Karma Yoga, as he emphasizes its benefits, are central.

In the Mahabharata, Arjuna’s fear of sin and failure (1.28–46) hinders his duty. Krishna’s teaching contrasts with Duryodhana’s ambition (1.3–11), assuring Arjuna that Karma Yoga’s selfless action protects against negative consequences, aligning with Kshatriya dharma. This encourages him to fight without hesitation.

Philosophically, this verse addresses the human fear of wasted effort, a theme Krishna refines with teachings on selfless action (2.47). Arjuna’s reluctance complicates his dharma, necessitating Krishna’s guidance on Karma Yoga’s safety. The theme of Karma Yoga underscores the Gita’s focus on fearless action.

Sanjaya’s narration frames Krishna’s teaching objectively, highlighting its reassurance. This verse serves as a metaphor for life’s endeavors, where sincere effort yields protection. Krishna’s teaching prepares readers for performing duty with confidence, free from fear of failure.
