Srimad Bhagavad Gita Shloka 10.30

Shloka 10.30

“Of Daityas, I am Prahlada; of subduers, I am time; of beasts, I am the lion; of birds, Garuda.”
Key Teaching: Krishna is Prahlada, time, the lion, and Garuda.
Theme: Guidance, Dharma, Vibhuti Yoga.
Description:
Krishna teaches that among Daityas, he is Prahlada; among subduers, time; among beasts, the lion; and among birds, Garuda. This verse, continuing 10.29, addresses Arjuna’s need for divine manifestations (2.9, 10.16). The themes of guidance, as Krishna instructs, dharma, as he clarifies divine forms, and Vibhuti Yoga, as he lists his glories, are central.

In the Mahabharata, Arjuna’s warrior fears (1.28–46) contrast with Duryodhana’s defiance (1.3–11). Krishna urges Arjuna to see him in powerful forms for his Kshatriya duty, aligning with Karma Yoga (2.47, 10.29). Krishna is time and strength.

Philosophically, this verse addresses the human awe of divine power, a theme Krishna refines with teachings on his pervasion (10.19). Arjuna’s eagerness reflects Krishna’s guidance overcoming reluctance. The theme of Vibhuti Yoga underscores the Gita’s focus on divine manifestations.

Sanjaya’s narration frames Krishna’s teaching objectively, emphasizing its powerful clarity. This verse serves as a metaphor for life’s strength, where Krishna is the lion and Garuda. Krishna’s teaching prepares readers for performing duty with divine courage, aligning with liberation.
