Srimad Bhagavad Gita Shloka 11.35

Shloka 11.35

“Sanjaya said: Hearing Krishna’s words, Arjuna, trembling, bowed with folded hands, and, overwhelmed with fear, spoke to Krishna in a faltering voice.”
Key Teaching: Arjuna, trembling and fearful, bows and responds to Krishna.
Theme: Guidance, Dharma, Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga.
Description:
Sanjaya narrates that Arjuna, hearing Krishna’s words, trembled, bowed with folded hands, and, overwhelmed with fear, spoke to Krishna in a faltering voice. This verse, continuing 11.34, addresses Arjuna’s reaction (2.9, 11.3). The themes of guidance, as Krishna’s words impact, dharma, as Arjuna responds reverently, and Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga, as he reacts to the vision, are central.

In the Mahabharata, Arjuna’s fear (1.28–46) contrasts with Duryodhana’s ignorance (1.3–11). His trembling supports his Kshatriya duty, aligning with Karma Yoga (2.47, 11.34), reflecting awe at Krishna’s power.

Philosophically, this verse addresses human fear before divine commands, a theme Krishna refines with teachings on duty (2.47). Arjuna’s reaction reflects Krishna’s guidance pushing past reluctance. The theme of Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga underscores the Gita’s focus on divine awe.

Sanjaya’s narration frames Arjuna’s response objectively, emphasizing its fearful clarity. This verse serves as a metaphor for life’s reverence, where Krishna’s words overwhelm. Krishna’s teaching prepares readers for performing duty with divine humility, aligning with liberation.
