Srimad Bhagavad Gita Shloka 7.5

Shloka 7.5

“This is My lower nature; know My higher nature, the lifeelement, by which this world is upheld.”
Key Teaching: Krishna’s higher nature, the lifeelement, sustains the world.
Theme: Guidance, Dharma, Jnana Vijnana Yoga.
Description:
Krishna distinguishes his lower material nature (7.4) from his higher nature, the lifeelement that sustains the world. This verse, continuing 7.4, addresses Arjuna’s need for deeper understanding (2.9). The themes of guidance, as Krishna instructs, dharma, as he clarifies divine sustenance, and Jnana Vijnana Yoga, as he emphasizes spiritual nature, are central.

In the Mahabharata, Arjuna’s material attachments (1.28–46) obscure divine truth. Krishna’s teaching contrasts with Duryodhana’s material focus (1.3–11), urging Arjuna to recognize the lifeelement for his Kshatriya duty, aligning with Karma Yoga (2.47, 7.1).

Philosophically, this verse addresses the human oversight of spiritual essence, a theme Krishna refines with teachings on divine nature (7.1–2). Arjuna’s reluctance complicates his dharma, necessitating Krishna’s guidance to understand the higher nature. The theme of Jnana Vijnana Yoga underscores the Gita’s focus on spiritual realization.

Sanjaya’s narration frames Krishna’s teaching objectively, emphasizing its divine clarity. This verse serves as a metaphor for life’s sustenance, where the lifeelement ensures existence. Krishna’s teaching prepares readers for performing duty with spiritual awareness, aligning with liberation.
